Like many other people in the UK I love a curry, I have spoken with many people about how best to make a curry and have tried lots of different guides on how to achieve an authentic curry base, needless to say, I've had very little success until I found this on you tube.

The Right to Smack

January 26, 2012 by Zaf   Comments (3)

For years there has been a concern amongst many in Britain and other parts of Europe that the smacking of children should be outlawed due its cruel and aggressive nature, or at least that seems to be the perception. Politicians and middle class parents have been the most vocal in advocating a total ban on smacking with little regard for how this may affect people, families or parents from more diverse social or cultural groups. That is not to say that everyone from anything other than a middle... Read full post

Street Art To Be Proud of

I travelled to Reading yesterday to check out the black history mural, a well-known landmark situated alongside the Inner Distribution Road and the back of The Oracle car park, Reading. It is one of those pieces of street art that has become a part of urban folk-law. It was created sixteen years ago to symbolise Reading’s multi-cultural community. It features prominent black figures alongside members of Reading’s own local community. It’s an impressive piece of work that... Read full post

Bajan Music

Despite being inhabited before the 16th century, not much is known about Barbadian music prior to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1536 and then the English in 1627. The Portuguese did not have much of an influence on Barbadian music, unlike English culture and music that helped shape the island's musical heritage. Even more music was brought to the Island by both Scottish and Irish settlers who emigrated in the 7th century. A large number of African slaves were brought to Barbados during the... Read full post

Culture, Nature or Nurture?

January 9, 2012 by Nat   Comments (0)

As you know i have been a feminist for most of my adult life and for me the feminist movement is a valuable and responsible response to a global problem. The sidelining of women, a situation that leaves women less empowered and apparently without value.
If the obvious and ongoing belief that women were by nature weaker, more nurturing and less aggressive than men, we would expect to find these characteristics in all cultures in every country in the world. However, we know that this is not the... Read full post

Religious Comedy?

I recently went to Bradford for a leg of the UK Muslim comedy tour starring Humza from 'Diary of a Badman' The comedy, as the title suggested the event was geared towards a muslim audience and not being a muslim myself I must confess to being a little apprehensive about my reception from a largely muslim crowd. But here's the thing, the humour explored and ridiculed many of the day to day events and situations that we all find funny, there were some jokes that I didn't quite understand because...
